Chuck Chats About Choke

Like the majority of you, I'm excited about seeing Sam Rockwell and Angelica Huston in Choke, and the wait is now over as the film is released nationwide today. Having read the book for October's PopUK Book Club, I'm intrigued to see how the film compares to Chuck Palahniuk's fantastic novel.

Choke follows Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell), a sex addicted Colonial village re-enactor who pretends to choke in restaurants to help pay for his mother's medical bills. Concerned that time is running out, he engages in various fantasies in an attempt to find out the identity of his father, aided by his best friend Denny (Brad William Henke) and his mother’s doctor Paige (Kelly Macdonald).

The book is hilarious, moving and shocking, so the film adaptation has a lot to live up to. Having won the Special July Prize for Best Work by an Ensemble Cast at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it certainly sounds like it's going to be great.

The corporation is adding their two main channels to the ones already available, which include News 24, BBC Three and BBC Four. Is John Sergeant Right To Leave Strictly Come Dancing?

John Sergeant has quit Strictly Come Dancing, saying that he's worried he may win the competition, despite not having the abilities of the other contestants. He's received constant criticism from the judges, but the love of the great British public has kept him completely safe from being voted off the show. He'll return on Saturday's show for a "farewell dance". John said:

"The trouble is that there is now a real danger that I might win the competition. Even for me that would be a joke too far. I am sorry to say I have decided to leave Strictly Come Dancing. It was always my intention to have fun on the show and I was hoping to stay in as long as possible."

Melanie Brown and fellow Dancing with the Stars alumnus Kelly Monaco are to star in PEEPSHOW, a burlesque-style show due to open in March in Las Vegas. Nicole Natters About Her Future Next to Hugh in Australia

Nicole Kidman doubled up her chic style in Sydney, going for a sleek chignon at the photo call for Australia and then literally letting her hair down for the world premiere. As we've seen from the rain-deluged jungle in I'm a Celebrity, the sun doesn't always shine in Australia, so Nicole and costar Hugh Jackman had to engage the services of umbrella holders as they walked the red carpet, but the rain didn't dull their smiles. It sounds like we'll need to make the most of Nicole's new releases while we still can since, like Angelina Jolie, Nicole has said she's unsure of her future as an actor:

"I am in a place in my life where ... I've had some great opportunities and I may just choose to have some more children. I've no idea what is in my future but I am very at peace with where I want to be. There are many things I want to do besides act."

After seeing photos of the shooting I can't wait to see this film, which opens in the UK on Boxing Day. Do you plan to see the Baz Luhrmann movie too?

Lovely Kylie Minogue was getting a whole lot of male attention in Argentina yesterday, as men jumped on each other's backs to get a glimpse at the pop princess. She's over there on tour at the moment, and stepped out for a little shopping on her day off. The latest rumours are that Kylie is to host the 2009 Brit Awards alongside the hilarious James Corden and Mathew Horne of Gavin & Stacey fame.

Kylie worked with Mathew on The Kylie Show at the end of 2007, where he played her assistant in the comedy skits between songs. I think this sounds like a great presenting team, but what do you think? Does this whet your appetite for The Brit Awards?

James McAvoy Is a Popular Guy Amongst a Variety of Stars

James McAvoy was honoured with the Film Award at the Variety Club's 56th Annual Showbusiness Awards in London last night, for his performances in movies like Atonement, The Last King of Scotland and Wanted. The accolades just keep on coming for James, who attended the ceremony with wife Anne-Marie Duff: not only is he to receive a Fellowship from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow next month (his old drama school), he's also nominated for Best European Actor for Atonement at this year's European Film Awards. As if that all that isn't enough, James will be walking the boards early next year alongside Nigel Harman in Three Days of Rain at London's Apollo Theatre. What a busy boy.

It finally happened: Daniel Evans was voted off The X Factor on Saturday night. Following Laura White's controversial exit the week before, nothing would have surprised me this weekend. The final seven contestants, including poorly Diana, performed Best of British songs.Daniel had to sing off against Rachel, and Simon, Louis and Cheryl all saved Rachel. The live US sketch show Saturday Night Live constantly gets people talking in America, and the videos often make their way around the world via the internet. Last night Paul Rudd guest-hosted the show, with appearances from Beyonce and a lycra-clad Justin Timberlake — check out this clip!

This week it's Best of British week featuring Leona Lewis, and it's all about to kick off on ITV1. I'll be popping in and out of the comments thread to chat during the first live show at 7.20pm until 8.50pm, then we'll all take the break between the shows, and then get right back on The X Factor discussion when the second show is on from 9.35pm until 10.20pm.

Pop DVD: Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was one of the big movie releases this year I was half uber-excited about, and half secretly dreading. As a big fan of the first set of movies, the prospect of a fourth, years later was a little scary. Harrison Ford was 64 years old during filming, and I didn't want the memory of our whip-cracking, snake-fearing hero to be tarnished. As it was I quite enjoyed the movie at the cinema, sure, it wasn't quite the same as the old movies, but it was a fun ride.

On DVD, the experience is slightly different thanks to the obviously changed screen size, but the fun thing about Indiana Jones films is the humour and the fun coursing through the middle of it. Indy gets plenty of jibes about his age, Shia LaBeouf comes along for the ride as leather jacket wearing, motorcycle riding young sidekick Mutt Williams, Cate Blanchett plays the villian, Karen Allen reappears as Marion, and there's a truly bizarre moment involving Shia and a whole load of monkeys.

When you and your family are all talked out over the Christmas period, and you fancy suspending disbelief and curling up for a fun movie, then this family film is a great way to spend a few hours. It was released on DVD earlier this week, so perhaps it's something to inspire your Christmas shopping lists along with our HolidaySugar Gift Guides?

Diana's Determined To Recover

In my The X Factor live chat last weekend, we were all rather shocked that Diana Vickers wasn't able to appear to perform on the show due to laryngitis. She seemed to be a favourite among those discussing the show with me last week, and she's certainly one of the ones I'd like to see go really far in the competition. The judges and producers allowed her to skip last week and there's been worry that she might not get better in time to perform this weekend, but here's some photos of poorly Diana leaving the contestants' house to head to rehearsals.

Her scarf is rather fitting for the scratchy pain her throat has been in no doubt. I look forward to seeing how she does on tomorrow night's show, if you're watching why not log on and watch with us? TV This Weekend: Children in Need, Outnumbered, I'm A Celeb

Those TV bosses have lined up some treats over the next three nights. First off is Children in Need, which takes over the BBC tonight. There'll be performances from McFly, Girls Aloud and Take That, a sneak peek at the Doctor Who Christmas Special, and a whole host of other goodies. Tune in to BBC1 at 9.05pm on Saturday and enjoy the comedy genius of Outnumbered. The semi-improvised sitcom is back with a second series, while the first series is out on DVD on Monday (and is one of my November Must Haves). By the time we get to Sunday, excitement will be at boiling point, as the latest series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here hits ITV.
